First attested as Early Modern Korean 담파고(淡婆姑) (tamphakwo) in the Jibong yuseol (芝峯類說 / 지봉유설), 1614; thereafter, also attested variously as Early Modern Korean 담파귀 (tamphakwuy), 담바 (tampa), and 담ᄇᆡ (tampoy).
