"Hibernia" viene fatto derivare da Hibernum, latino per inverno a causa del clima freddo e piovoso (quasi costantemente invernale) dell'isola.

Un'altra possibilità è che Hibernia derivi da Ivernia che tradotto in latino risulta Ierne, che era il nome dato da Piteo, un mercante e esploratore greco del IV secolo a.C. ; Ierne deriva anch'esso da Erin il nome mitologico dell'irlanda.

Un'altra teoria fa derivare Hibernia dal gaelico irlandese *Iweriu (Ériu in irlandese antico) che proviene dalla radice indoeuropea *PiHwerjoHn (che significa "il paese fertile")
