dal latino tardo bisextilis
L'origine deriva dagli antichi calendari romani, anteriori al calendario giuliano. I giorni venivano indicati in base alla distanza dalle calende (inizio mese), dalle none (tra il 5° e il 13° giorno del mese, a seconda dei mesi) e dalle idi (tra il 7° e il 15° giorno del mese, a seconda del mese). Così il bis-sestile era il giorno aggiunto al calendario nel periodo invernale tra il settile ed il sestile delle calende di marzo, cioè un giorno inserito tra il settimo ed il sesto giorno prima dell'inizio di marzo; in pratica, era attorno all'attuale 24 febbraio.
