Hungarian

Etymology

Uncertain. Due to its earlier meaning "machine, instrument", it is commonly suggested to be a borrowing from Common Turkic *āltag (device, method; deceit, trick) through a Turkic language before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries), making it cognate with ál (false, fake).
