Pronunciation
Noun
öndər (definite accusative öndəri, plural öndərlər)
- (poetic, higher register) leader
- ulu öndər ― great leader
1992, Bəxtiyar Vahabzadə, Vətən Marşı, Baku; reprinted as Bəxtiyar Vahabzadə. Seçilmiş əsərləri, volume I, Öndər Nəşriyyat, 2004, page 238:Dedi öndər: "Yönü bayraqdakı üç rəngdən alım".- The leader said: "I will get the direction from the three colors of the flag".
2015 July 2, “Azərbaycanlıların “türkiyəcə” danışmaq və yazmaq heyranlığı [The fascination of the Azerbaijani for speaking and writing "Turkey-ish"]”, in Ağalar Qutun bloqu:Əski türkcənin “ön” isim kökünə, “bayraqdar”, “cahandar” kimi sözlərdən yaxşı tanıdığımız farscanın “-dar” sözünü (tutan deməkdir) artırıb, “öndər” sözünü yaradıblar. Azərbaycanda isə çoxları elə bilir “öndər” xalis türkcə bir sözdür, halbuki, “öndər” də türkcə yox, türkiyəcədir.- By appending the Persian word '-dar' (meaning 'one who holds') that we know well from words like bayraqdar (“standard-bearer”) and cahandar (“cosmocrat”) to the old Turkic nominal stem ön, they have created the word 'öndər'. In the meantime, most people in Azerbaijan believe the word 'öndər' to be a pure Turkic word, although it is Turkey-ish rather than Turkic.
