Icelandic

Etymology

From archaic ólpa (wide coat with cap), of uncertain origin, though probably from a Proto-Germanic *wulpǭ (woven garment), from a Proto-Indo-European *welp- (to bend, wrap around), which appears to be a p-extension of *welH- (to roll), thus denoting a "rolled-up garment". See also Middle English wlappen (to wrap), Sami wuölppo (woman's garment), the latter which appears to be borrowed from North Germanic.[1]

Pronunciation

Noun

úlpa f (genitive singular úlpu, nominative plural úlpur)

  1. a thick winter coat (often with a fur-lined cap); a parka; an anorak
