From Old Norse þjórr, from Proto-Germanic *þeuraz, from Proto-Indo-European *táwros. Cognate with Faroese tjórur, Danish tyr and Swedish tjur, and more distantly with Ancient Greek ταῦρος (taûros) and Latin taurus. Doublet of tarfur, which was borrowed from Old Irish.
