Etymology

đống (pile) +‎ đa (banyan), literally Piles of Banyan

According to folk etymology, after the defeat of the Qing army (1788-1789), Emperor Quang Trung ordered his soldiers to collect enemy's corpses into 12 wide pits for burial. But due to too many enemy corpses, high mounds were formed. Later on these mounds were overgrown with banyan trees.
