Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἀποφαίνω (apophaínō, “display; declare”) as in the phrase (with mediopassive form) ἀποφαίνομαι (apophaínomai) γνώμην f (gnṓmēn, accusative singular) "declare opinion" and Semantic loan from French se déclarer.^[1] Morphologically, απο- (apo-) +‎ φαίνομαι (faínomai, “appear”).
