Inherited from Byzantine Greek γλιστρῶ (glistrô) from ἐγλιστρῶ (eglistrô),[1] itself from Koine Greek ἐκλιστρῶ (eklistrô), contracted form of ἐκλιστράω (eklistráō) with muted arctic vowel  – same process as in γλιτώνω (glitóno) –, ultimately from ἐκ- (ek-) + λίστρον (lístron, tool for smoothing).[2]
