Probably an eastern loanword according to Beekes. Compare Arabic زِنْجَفْر (zinjafr), related to Persian شنگرف (šangarf) from Old Persian 𐎿𐎡𐎣𐎲𐎽𐎢𐏁 (s-i-k-b-ru-u-š /sinkabruš/, “carnelian”), of unknown origin.
