Borrowed from an eastern Mediterranean substrate language. One likely candidate is the ancestor of Fayyumic Coptic ϩⲗⲏⲣⲓ (hlēri) (compare Sahidic Coptic ϩⲣⲏⲣⲉ (hrēre)). Similar words in other languages, probably from the same source, include Albanian lule (flower), Hittite (alil-, flower).[1]
