From Byzantine Greek σκύφτω (skúphtō), with metaplasm of -βω (-vo) replacing -φτω (-phtō) by analogy of τρίβω (trívo, to grate, rub) and its past stem τριψ- (trips-), from Ancient Greek κύπτω (kúptō, to bend, bow down) with an epenthetic σ- (s-).[1]
