Etymology

Closest to ψόλος (psólos, “soot”). Furnée connects ψοῖθος (psoîthos, “ashes”) and assumes also *ψῶδος (*psôdos, “dirt”), on the basis of ψωδαρέον (psōdaréon, “dry, parched; squalid, wretched”), suggesting a Pre-Greek origin.
