Etymology

Perhaps derived from Proto-Yeniseian *atɬ-Vŋ (trousers, literally halves). Cognate with Yug álɨŋ, Kott aláŋ and Assan álaŋ.

Werner (2002) posits two other possibilities, either being borrowed from Kyrgyz ала (ala, inner part of a pair of trousers) or from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ëla (bottoms), for which compare Finnish ali (underside, bottoms).
