Etymology

Literally, jam day. First attested in 1998. From a scene in Малы́ш и Ка́рлсон (Malýš i Kárlson, Little Brother and Karlsson), a Russian cartoon adaptation of Karlsson-on-the-Roof by Astrid Lindgren, where Karlsson is wishing the boy a happy birthday while eating jam but, since the Russian варе́нье (varénʹje, jam) rhymes with рожде́ние (roždénije, birth), he confuses the words and wishes him a happy jam day instead.
