Etymology

ко́ми (kómi) +‎ -як (-jak), possibly formed by analogy to Russian пермя́к (permják), or a blend of ко́ми (kómi) +‎ пермя́к (permják), which is plausible because of the existence of a related ethnicity of Komi-Permyaks.

Among the inhabitants of the Komi Republic who identify themselves as ethnically Komi there is a word, which causes sharply negative perception: it is the word "Komyak". I remember this very well, because it was very much alive in the school environment during the Soviet period. If you want to insult a person, call him "Komyak". It's like referring to a Jew as kike. Offensive, unpleasant.
