Komi-Zyrian
Etymology
Uncertain:
- Lytkin argues for an onomatopoeic origin, shared with Hungarian kutya (“dog”) and Northern Mansi кӯтюв (kūtûv, “dog”), but not necessarily genetically related to these.
- Hauzenberg argues for a Russian borrowing, from a term related to Russian кутёнок (kutjónok), Russian кутя (kutja) and the dog call Russian куть (kutʹ). In this case, the stem куть- (kuť-) was borrowed into Komi-Zyrian, with various suffixes being attached to it, resulting in the forms кути (kuťi) and кутю (kuťu) along with this one.
Compare also other similar terms, like Latvian kuce, Serbo-Croatian kučka/кучка, Bulgarian куче (kuče), Armenian կուտիկ (kutik)
