Not clear. Per BER, most plausibly via semantic shift from Proto-Slavic *kǫblo (lair, nest) + (-ja). Akin to Old Polish kęblać (to nourish, to feed), kęblić (to rise, to tend), dialectal Russian ку́блиться (kúblitʹsja, to nest).
