Ultimately from Common Turkic *lāčïn. Cognate with Turkmen laçyn, Kazakh лашын (laşyn), Uyghur لاچىن (lachin), Kyrgyz ылаачын (ılaacın), Shor лачын, Bashkir ыласын (ılasın) and Chuvash лачӑм (lač̬ăm). Chuvash лаччӑн (laččăn) is perhaps a more recent borrowing from Tatar лачын (laçın).
