According to Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, inherited from Proto-Slavic *merzgavъ, akin to 0-grade verb мръ́ждя (mrǎ́ždja, “to glimmer”). Has been also compared with Proto-Slavic *brězgъ (“downbreak”), on the assumption of irregular alternation *br- ↔ *mr-.
Gerov spells the lemma with nasal -ѧ-, perhaps in analogy with (rhyming) near-synonym дре́згав (drézgav, “impermeable, dim, shadowy”) < *dręzga (“thicket”).
