Uncertain. Cognate with Macedonian пастри (pastri) and possibly related to Greek παστρεύω (pastrévo), Romanian păstra.

According to St. Mladenov, from the root of Proto-Slavic *pasti (to herd, to shepherd), *pasiti (to save), *zapasъ (stock) (formally equivalent to Proto-Slavic *pas(t)riti).
