From an unattested form *стромиголов(у), related to строми́ти (stromýty, to insert, stick) and голова́ (holová, head).[1] Possibly ultimately from Old Church Slavonic стрьмоглавь (strĭmoglavĭ, head down, headfirst, headlong),[2] whence Russian стремгла́в (stremgláv).[3] Compare also Belarusian стрымгало́ў (strymhalóŭ), Czech střemhlav.
