From Proto-Mordvinic *sirńə. Ultimately borrowed from an Indo-Iranian language; compare Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬭𐬀𐬦𐬀 (zarańa, gold). Komi-Permyak зарни (zarńi) and Hungarian arany were separately borrowed from the same Indo-Iranian root.
