Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *säťmə ~ *śäťmə, wherein *-mə is a noun-forming suffix (compare dialectal Moksha śäťav). Ultimately may be onomatopoeic and related to Erzya чать- (čať-) in чатьмонемс (čaťmońems, to be quiet).

First coined by bishop Damaskin in 1785 as сатьме (saťme).
