From Proto-Mordvinic *torə. Possibly connected to Proto-Uralic *terä (cutting edge; blade). Compare Finnish terä, Hungarian tőr. Soviet era dictionaries somehow omitted this word, although it appears in earlier ones and is widely presented in folklore.
