From an earlier Bulgarian чи́рей (čírej), from Proto-Slavic *čirьjь. Equivalent to чир (čir, ulcer) (dialectal) +‎ -ей (-ej). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian чи̏р (ulcer), Slovene čȋr, čirȃj, Russian чи́рий (čírij), Ukrainian чи́р (čýr), чи́ряк (čýrjak), Polish сzуrеk.

Possibly a wanderwort found also in Greek σκίρρος (skírros, callus), Turkic (compare Turkish çirik (pus))
