Nikolaev and Starostin connect the latter with the second element in Dargwa дугелибуг (dugelibug, badger) and propose a genetic connection with Proto-Northwest Caucasian *bIaga (jackal; fox), other proposed connections are with Sumerian 𒊊 (pirig, lion), Proto-Indo-Iranian *wy(H)āgʰrás (tiger).
