A connection with Latvian jùmts (“roof”), jùmt (“to thatch”) is one possibility. This etymology conflicts with the doctrine that *jaN became *ję in Proto-Slavic.
ESSJa reconstructs *jutiti sę instead, allegedly from Proto-Indo-European *yewH- (“to blend, mix”) with a t-extension.
