According to Martirosyan possibly a substrate word connected with անթայր (antʻayr) and Ancient Greek ἄνθραξ (ánthrax, charcoal).[1]

According to Ačaṙyan, possibly a Georgian-Zan borrowing: compare Georgian ანთება (anteba, to kindle).[2]
