From Proto-Indo-European *dʰél(H)- (to come out, sprout, grow; to become green; shoot, vegetation, herb); related to դալար (dalar) (see there for more), դեղձ (dełj), դեղբ (dełb), դեղին (dełin) and possibly դղեզ (dġez). The basic meaning was “herb”. The sense of “medicine” developed from the use of herbs as medicine. See also Old Georgian მდელოჲ (mdeloy, grass).
