Literally, "side-guardian" or "side-sover", wholly borrowed from an unattested Iranian compound equivalent to կուշտ (kušt) + -ապանակ (-apanak). Old Georgian კუშტაბანი (ḳušṭabani, “buttonhole”) is from the same source.
