Etymology
From Old Armenian*կոպիտ(*kopit), attested in the compound կոպտարանձն(koptaranjn), of unknown origin. The related words in Georgian, Turkish and Azerbaijani are considered Armenian borrowings. J̌ahukyan compares to Karakhanid(koptak, “coarse, rough”) in Kutadgu Bilig, on which see Räsänen, without the Armenian. Note also Middle Armenianկոպտոն(kopton, “oil cake”).
