Middle Armenian

Etymology

Inherited from Old Armenian յերթ (yertʻ), from յ- (y-) +‎ երթ (ertʻ, going). The spelling հերթ (hertʻ) instead of յերթ (yertʻ) reflects the late pronunciation of յ (y) word-initially and the obscuration of the etymology. For the development of the sense "turn" from "going" compare typologically Russian ход (xod).
