Uncertain. Ačaṙyan considers a Semitic borrowing, comparing Arabicظَلِيم(ẓalīm, “male ostrich”), plural ظِلْمَان(ẓilmān). This is however a transparent Arabic-only formation, the first consonant of which corresponds to ṣ/sˤ/ in Akkadian and Northwest Semitic, ṭ/tˤ/ in Aramaic.
