Old Armenian
Etymology
From Middle Iranian *sōx, whence also Persian سوخ (sôx). Further origin unknown. Has been linked by some with Proto-Turkic *sogan, whence Southern Altai согоно (sogono), Tuvan согуна (soguna), Khakas соған (soğan), Bashkir һуған (huğan), Chuvash сухан (suh̬an), Azerbaijani soğan (“onion”), Turkish soğan, Old Turkic 𐰣𐰍𐰽 (soɣun) and others, all meaning “onion”, also borrowed in to Mongolian as сонгино (songino). Also a derivation from Sanskrit सुकन्द (sukanda, “onion”) has been suggested, but this is not generally accepted.
