Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

Perhaps inherited from Proto-Indo-European *dŕ̥-tV-, from *der- (to split, separate, tear), whence especially Proto-Germanic *turdą (manure), Sanskrit दृति (dṛ́ti, leather bag), Ancient Greek δαρτός (dartós, flayed).[1][2]

Compare also Proto-Iranian *dart- ~ *dr̥t- (dung), whence for example Wakhi δart (dung; pressed dung used as fuel; manure), Sogdian 𐫔𐫡𐫤𐫏𐫝 (δrtyc /δərtič/, dung, filth).[3][4][5] Compare also synonymous Northern Kurdish т’әр’т (t’errt).[6]
