Likely still inherited from Middle High German zemen, Old High German zemmen, Proto-West Germanic *tammjan and ultimately Proto-Germanic *tamjaną, however the Yiddish form appears to have lost the umlaut, possibly influenced by Middle High German zam (cf. German zahm). Related to צאַם (tsam).
