Borrowed into Standard Arabic from the dialects. Ultimately from the root ح د ث (ḥ-d-ṯ), with ṯ replaced by t, which is a typical feature of Levantine and Egyptian Arabic, as well as some Peninsular and Maghrebi dialects.
