Etymology

From شَرْمَطَ (šarmaṭa, “to shred”). Most Semitists agree that it is of non-Semitic origin; perhaps from Middle Persian (clm /⁠čarm⁠/, “a piece of skin, hide, or leather”) (see Persian (čarm)), perhaps conflated with Middle Persian (šlm /⁠šarm⁠/, “shame”). Compare Hebrew סְמַרְטוּט (s'martút, “rag”), Aramaic מַרְטוּטָא (marṭūṭā), סְמַרְטוּטָא (səmarṭūṭā, “coarse garment”).
