Acc. to Talât Tekin, reflexive of Bulgar كُوَج (küveç) (>*küveçil) but had metathesis. Acc. to Erdal, from Proto-Turkic *köĺč-, archaic form of Bulgar كُوَج (küeç). See Bulgar بلجِ (balči).
