Borrowed from Aramaic מַרְזְבָא (marzəḇā), מִרְזְבָא (mirzəḇā, “gutter, spout, water-pipe”), from earlier Aramaic נַרְזְבָא (narzəḇā, “drain pipe, gutter”), considered a variant of Akkadian 𒄿𒍝𒁉 (naṣṣabū, “water outlet, drain”); cognate with native ن ض ب (n-ḍ-b) meaning “water disappeared or sank into the earth”, “to drain or dry up”.
