Etymology
Inherited from Middle Persian (hṕtwlng /haftōring/, “the Big Dipper”), borrowed from Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬞𐬙𐬋𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬧𐬔𐬀 (haptōiriṇga), compound of 𐬵𐬀𐬞𐬙𐬀 (hapta, “seven”) + Avestan -𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬧𐬔𐬀 (-iriṇga, apparently "sign", cognate with Sanskrit लिङ्ग (liṅga)): " seven signs".
However, reanalyzed in New Persian as هفت (haft, “seven”) + اورنگ (owrang, “throne”): " the Seven Thrones".
