Unknown.
According to the 1390s chronicle فُتوحاتِ میرانشاهی (fotuhât-e mirânšâhi, “Conquests of Miran Shah”), the word is an obscure word meaning شکافتن (šekâftan, “to split; to destroy”). The Kart founder is said to have fought viciously as a commander for the Mongols in a battle against the Khwarazmshah, during which the Khwarazmians said آن غوری کرت است (ân ğuri kart ast, “This Ghurid is kart”), whence the name.
