Etymology

Unknown.

According to the 1390s chronicle فُتوحاتِ میرانشاهی (fotuhât-e mirânšâhi, Conquests of Miran Shah), the word is an obscure word meaning شکافتن (šekâftan, to split; to destroy). The Kart founder is said to have fought viciously as a commander for the Mongols in a battle against the Khwarazmshah, during which the Khwarazmians said آن غوری کرت است (ân ğuri kart ast, This Ghurid is kart), whence the name.
