Inherited from Middle Persian (gwmbt' /⁠gumbad⁠/, dome, fire-temple), from Classical Syriac ܩܘܒܬܐ (qubbəṯā). Doublet of قبه (qobbe, dome), also from Syriac but through Arabic. Compare Old Armenian գմբեթ (gmbetʻ) and Georgian გუმბათი (gumbati), Iranian borrowings.
