Inherited from Middle Persian (gwmbt' /⁠gumbad⁠/, “dome, fire-temple”), from Classical Syriac ܩܘܒܬܐ (qubbəṯā). Doublet of قبه (qobbe, “dome”), also from Syriac but through Arabic. Compare Old Armenian գմբեթ (gmbetʻ) and Georgian გუმბათი (gumbati), Iranian borrowings.
