From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hápnas (“wealth, property, riches”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ép-n-os. Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬟𐬥𐬀𐬤𐬵𐬀𐬧𐬙 (afnaŋᵛhaṇt, “rich in property”), Latin opulentus (“wealthy, rich”).

     यच् चि॒त्रम् अप्न॑ उ॒षसो॒ वह॑न्तीजा॒नाय॑ शशमा॒नाय॑ भ॒द्रं ।
     तन् नो॑ मि॒त्रो वरु॑णो मामहन्ता॒म् अदि॑तिः॒ सिन्धुः॑ पृथि॒वी उ॒त द्यौः ॥

     yác citrám ápna uṣáso váhantījānā́ya śaśamānā́ya bhadráṃ.
     tán no mitró váruṇo māmahantām áditiḥ síndhuḥ pṛthivī́ utá dyaúḥ.

     Whatever splendid wealth the Dawns bring with them to bless the man who offers praise and worship,
     That may Mitra, Varuṇa grant us, and Aditi and Sindhu, Earth and Heaven.
