- लुकमान आये और सामने बैठ गये। मालिक ने छुरी उठायी और अपने हाथ से खरबूजा काटकर एक फांक लुकमान को दी। उन्होंने ऐसे शौक से खायी कि मालिक ने दूसरी फांक दी, यहां तक कि सत्रहवीं फांक तक वे बड़े शौक से खाते रहे। जब केवल एक टुकड़ा बाकी रह गया तो मालिक ने कहा, "इसको मैं खाऊंगा, जिससे मुझे भी यह मालूम हो कि खरबूजा कितना मीठा है।"
- lukmān āye aur sāmne baiṭh gaye. mālik ne churī uṭhāyī aur apne hāth se kharbūjā kāṭkar ek phāṅk lukmān ko dī. unhõne aise śauk se khāyī ki mālik ne dūsrī phāṅk dī, yahā̃ tak ki satrahvī̃ phāṅk tak ve baṛe śauk se khāte rahe. jab keval ek ṭukṛā bākī rah gayā to mālik ne kahā, "isko ma͠i khāūṅgā, jisse mujhe bhī yah mālūm ho ki kharbūjā kitnā mīṭhā hai."
