Etymology

Uncertain, though probably a substrate loanword from a Munda language.[1] Other theories link the word to the Vedic-attested जाम्बील (jā́mbīla, saliva (perhaps)) (itself of unclear origin and interpretation), via an unattested root जम्बी (jambī); the purported semantic link would be "saliva-inducing (sour) fruit" > "citron".[2]
