Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *díštiš, from Proto-Indo-European *déyḱ-tis. By surface analysis, दिश् (diś, to point out, show, root) +‎ -ति (-ti).[1] Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬌 (dišti, a unit of measure).

The sense "handspan" has been conflated with दृष्टि (dṛṣṭi, sight) in some of the descendants.[2]
