     नम उच्चैर्घोषायाक्रन्दयते पत्तीनाम् पतये नमः ।

     nama uccairghoṣāyākrandayate pattīnām pataye namaḥ.

     Homage to he who calls out loudly, to he who screams, to the leader of infantrymen, homage!

     c. 1200 BCE – 1000 BCE, Atharvaveda 7.62.1:

     अयम् अग्निः सत्पतिर् वृद्धवृष्णो रथीव पत्तीन् अजयत् पुरोहितः ।
     नाभा पृथिव्यां निहितो दविद्युतद् अधस् पदं कृणुतां ये पृतन्यवः ॥

     ayam agniḥ satpatir vṛddhavṛṣṇo rathīva pattīn ajayat purohitaḥ.
     nābhā pṛthivyāṃ nihito davidyutad adhas padaṃ kṛṇutāṃ ye pṛtanyavaḥ.

     Like a warrior on a chariot, Agni here, grown mighty, Lord of the brave, Chief Priest, hath subdued the foot-soldiers.
     Laid on earth's centre he hath flashed and glittered. May he lay our enemies low beneath us.
